At Tudor Academy, our Music curriculum is guided by our PUPAC values and the curriculum drivers of collaboration, communication, and creativity. These principles ensure that every child is encouraged to work together, express themselves through music, and explore their creative potential. Our curriculum is designed to provide diverse and high-quality musical experiences that inspire students and help them develop a deep appreciation for music.
Curriculum Intent and Structure
The Music curriculum at Tudor Academy is crafted to engage and inspire pupils, fostering a love of music and developing their talents as musicians. Our approach is inclusive, offering opportunities for all students to perform, listen to, review, and evaluate a wide range of music from different historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions. We aim to build students' confidence and creativity, helping them achieve a sense of accomplishment through music.
Students learn to sing, use their voices, create and compose music individually and collaboratively. They also have the chance to learn various musical instruments, explore music technology, and progress to higher levels of musical proficiency. The curriculum covers key musical concepts such as pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, and appropriate notations.
Learning Approach and Skills Development
We implement two main programmes: Charanga and Rhythm Connection. Charanga provides structured, half-termly lessons tailored to each year group, while Rhythm Connection focuses on teaching notation, performance, and composition. Through these programmes, students explore singing, Samba drumming, glockenspiels, and more, ensuring a comprehensive musical education.
Performance and Evaluation
Performance is a key component of our curriculum, with students regularly showcasing their skills in assemblies and special events, such as Christmas and end-of-year celebrations. Listening and appraising are integral parts of the programme, where students analyse core songs, identify musical elements, and discuss the emotional impact of the music. They learn to read and write music notation, developing skills in rhythm, pitch, and composition using instruments like glockenspiels and boomwhackers.
Inclusive and Cultural Awareness
Our curriculum also includes exploring the history of music across different cultures, enriching students' understanding of global musical heritage. By studying various musical traditions, from Chinese and West African music to European, Indian, and Latin American genres, students gain a broader cultural perspective and appreciation for diversity.
Key Features and Objectives
Through our Music curriculum, Tudor Academy aims to nurture students' musical abilities, confidence, and appreciation for the art, ensuring they leave with a lifelong connection to the world of music.
